Packing luggage is that arduous exercise that all of us have to go through before a trip. Efficient packing is all about maximizing room and minimizing wrinkles. Here are 5 travel tips for packing luggage that will help you pack better and smarter:

1. Pack Light ! - This is something you will hear the luggage experts say all the time. Try to limit yourself to 2 bags, if at all possible. It’s ideal if you are able to pack in only a carry-on and a smaller tote. This will save you the hassles at the check in point and at baggage claim. Make sure you check with your airline about luggage rules and restrictions before your flight.

2. Pack tight - Place your shoes and other heavier items such as bottles and electronic items on the bottom and along the sides of your luggage. Socks and underwear can be tucked into your shoes to create more room. Another useful tip to help you pack tight is to roll up T-shirts and other casual clothes. This will help you maximize the available space in your luggage, and you’ll also find that the rolled up clothes are less wrinkled when you unpack. Try to avoid overpacking since this is bound to cause considerable wear on your bag and zippers.

3. Plan your wardrobe - Planning your packing in general, and your wardrobe in particular, is an important part in your arsenal of travel tips for packing luggage. Plan your clothing around one main coordinating color. Colors such as black and khaki are good, neutral ‘foundation’ colors around which you can base your attire for different events and different days. Try to pack clothes that work well with each other and can be easily interchanged. Avoid taking several pairs of shoes, since shoes occupy a lot of space. Choose your clothing based on the weather conditions at your destination. Pack old clothes and plan to leave them behind, giving you more room for carrying back gifts and other shopping items.

4. Carry on always - Carry on any valuables such as jewelry, money, keys, and documents. Include your medications in your carry on luggage, as well. It’s a good idea to carry at least one change of clothes in your carry on, in case your checked baggage is delayed, or even worse, stolen or lost. Make sure you check your airline’s carry on luggage rules and restrictions.

5. Secure your luggage - Always lock your luggage to prevent it from opening accidentally, and more importantly, to help deter theft. For larger pieces of luggage (26″ or higher), the use of a luggage strap is highly recommended. Luggage straps will not only prevent accidental opening and deter thieves, but it will also help you more easily identify your luggage on the carousel.
